Friday, January 12, 2018

Sacramento - Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond) honored Arnold Perkins as the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC) Unsung Hero Award Honoree for the 15th Assembly District in recognition of his work to help disadvantaged youth and his commitment to social justice and health equity.

“Arnold Perkins is a master mentor to many including me and the countless others he touched in our district,” said Thurmond. “Arnold’s actions come from the heart and he always puts the needs of the community and people first. This award perfectly depicts who Arnold is to many people in this region, an unsung hero.”

From 1994 to 2006 Arnold was the Director of the Alameda County Department of Public Health, providing leadership and management for a staff of over 500 employees. Prior to directing the department, Arnold was a high school teacher and principal. His long commitment to bettering the lives of others includes serving in roles such as a non-profit executive director, family counselor and advocate, foundation program officer, college professor and administrator, and restaurant owner and operator. Arnold is a respected speaker and facilitator in the areas of organizational change, conflict resolution, team building, creative leadership, community development and group dynamics.

Arnold has received numerous accolades for his community work from organizations including the Centers for Disease Control, United Way of the Bay Area, The Center for Independent Living, and The San Francisco Foundation. In 2014, The California Endowment awarded him with the Health Equity Founders Award and created the Arnold X. Perkins Award for outstanding health equity practices in his honor. In 2016, he was named a Salzburg Global Fellow for his work in building communities.

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., the CLBC recognizes Unsung Heroes, initiators of positive change in the Black community. The honorees were recognized at this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast on Jan. 11th and today during the Assembly and Senate floor sessions.
