Thurmond Holds Teacher and School Employee Housing Roundtable

Wednesday, March 21, 2018

Sacramento – Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond) held a roundtable discussion addressing the lack of affordable housing for teachers and school employees and its effect on teacher recruitment and retention.   Speakers, including educators, California Housing Finance Agency representatives, and multifamily development experts, discussed housing needs as well as potential solutions that would allow teachers and school employees to live near where they work.

“California is facing a teacher shortage which is exacerbated by the lack of affordable housing,” Thurmond said. “I want to ensure that teachers and school employees can live in the communities where they work. This was the first of many important conversations that needs to be had to address this crisis.  Today showed that when you have the right people in the conversation, you can come up with creative ways to deal with complex problems.”

This legislative session Thurmond introduced AB 2788, which provides a tool for school districts to increase teacher recruitment and retention by creating a program to provide financial assistance to school districts seeking to develop rental housing for school employees.

In attendance at the hearing along with Thurmond was Senator Ben Allen (D- West Covina). Speakers included Matt Duffy, Superintendent, West Contra Costa Unified School District; Armando Sanchez, Executive Director, Housing Endowment and Regional Trust of San Mateo County; Andrea Osgood, Director, Real Estate Development, Eden Housing; Tom Nann, Manager of Lender Services Unit in Single Family Lending, CalHFA; and Steve Gallagher, Marketing and External Affairs, Keep Your Home California.

The hearing was held in Sacramento at the State Capitol.
