Thurmond Bill Giving Playground Employees Classified Benefits Passes Assembly
SACRAMENTO – AB 2160 authored, by Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond), provides benefits and worker protections to part-time playground employees. AB 2160 passed out of the California Assembly today and now heads to the Senate for consideration.
“Moving my bill forward shows that my Assembly colleagues and I are on the same page regarding worker benefits and protections for all playground employees,” said Thurmond. “This bill guarantees that all playground employees will receive benefits.”
Last year, Thurmond authored AB 670, which was signed into law by Governor Brown. The bill provided part-time playground employees who were at the time excluded from the benefits of classified employees.
AB 2160 will ensure complete uniformity across all school districts with fairness and equity in rights, benefits and protection for school employees working in part-time playground positions.
The bill is sponsored by the California School Employee Association and supported by the California Teachers Association, California Labor Federation, and AFL-CIO.
