Assemblymember Thurmond’s Refinery Bill Passes Legislature

Sacramento, CA – AB 55, by Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond) improves safety for oil refinery workers, and surrounding community members. The bill passed the California Legislature today and now heads to the Governor’s office.

“I want to acknowledge my colleagues for moving forward this bill that enhances employee and community safety,” said Thurmond. "This bill improves oversight of refinery safety laws, by requiring the use of a skilled and trained workforce.”

Following the 2012 Chevron refinery explosion in Richmond, California there was renewed legislative and administrative action aimed at improving refinery safety for the benefit of refinery workers and the health of surrounding communities.

California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, California State Association of Electrical Workers, California State Pipe Trades Council, District Council 16, Painters and Allied Trades, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Western States Council of Sheet Metal Workers are in support of this bill. The State Building and Construction Trades Council of California is the bill’s Sponsor.
