Assemblymember Tim Grayson meets constituents at his Senior Scam Stopper Seminar in Pittsburg, CA.

(Concord, CA) – This morning Assemblymember Timothy S. Grayson (D-Concord) hosted a Senior Scam Stopper Seminar at the Marina Event Center in Pittsburg in conjunction with the Contractors State License Board.

“It is critical that we are all armed with the tools needed to protect ourselves and our loved ones, especially those in our aging population, from deceptive business practices and fraud,” said Assemblymember Grayson. “These seminars are some of my favorite events to host because it brings all the best information and resources to one place so our community can learn how to recognize and report predatory behavior and avoid falling victim to scams.”

According to one financial institution, seniors lose over $36 billion each year to elder financial abuse with the highest proportion of these loses, nearly $17 billion annually, attributed to deceptive scams. The Federal Bureau of Investigation also reports that older Americans are far less likely to report scams due in part to a lack of knowledge of who to report it to.

Today’s seminar was the third of its kind that Assemblymember Grayson has hosted in both Contra Costa and Solano Counties. The event featured speakers from the Contractors State License Board, the Department of Insurance, Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Unit, and the Contra Costa County Health Insurance and Advocacy Program. In addition, there were representatives and information from the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, Contra Costa County Veterans Services, and the Contra Costa Family Justice Center.

Tim Grayson represents the 14th Assembly District that includes the communities of Benicia, Concord, Clayton, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Vallejo, Pittsburg and Walnut Creek. For more information please visit the Assemblymember’s website, www.assembly.ca.gov/a14.
